How does the fractional CO2 laser work?

Treatment with the fractional CO2 laser is a well-proven and long-tested procedure that has been re-established and has developed into the gold standard for skin rejuvenation, using modern CO2 lasers that have since been updated multiple times. This procedure harnesses the skins own regenerative capacity to partially reform and grow back. Multiple tiny skin areas are ablated in a controlled manner using the CO2 laser, which creates many tiny holes within a defined area of the skin. Old skin is thereby shed, and the subsequent healing process completely renews the skin, which then grows back tighter, smoother, and finer, thus also making wrinkles and hyperpigmentation elegantly disappear.

The CO2 Laser Treatment:
- Procedure: The CO2 fractional laser treatment is the most modern and effective procedure for skin renewal and skin tightening, harnessing the skins regenerative capacity. It is a minimally invasive procedure in which microscopically small skin areas are ablated to a controlled depth. Using a specially developed scanner, many tiny holes, hardly visible to the naked eye, are shot into the skin. The ensuing healing process renews the skin, which becomes tighter, smoother, and finer, and bothersome pigmentations disappear. This process leads successively to skin renewal and skin rejuvenation.
- Execution: The skin area in question is thoroughly cleaned before the procedure begins. For most people, the treatment is associated with slight, tolerable pain, which is alleviated by the prior application of a pain-relieving cream or cooling of the skin. The treatment time is about twenty minutes, depending on the size of the skin area.
- Aftercare: After 7 to 10 days, the treated areas are healed. Redness occurs for up to two days, after which (days 3-5) scaling of the lasered areas takes place; they appear tanned at this time. Make-up to cover up is allowed. During the aftercare phase, the skin should be protected from intense sun exposure for two to three months and therefore cared for with a moisturizing sunscreen with SPF 50+. Since skin renewal and collagen formation take several months, a sustainable and visible treatment success is to be expected gradually over the course of two to three months.

The fractional CO2 laser emits laser energy in tiny spots to create small holes in the skin and remove old skin. The laser energy stimulates the immigration of new cells, the production of collagen and elastin to improve the appearance of the skin.
This laser is used in anti-aging treatment of wrinkles, fine lines, scars and sun damage. The field of treatment is therefore very wide, since the laser initiates a complete renewal of the epidermis, which naturally has a corresponding effect on many indications mentioned.
The treatment is very efficient, as a lot of energy is delivered already in the first session. The duration depends on the size of the area to be treated. Usually, one treatment lasts between 30 and 60 minutes.
The treatment may cause some degree of pain or discomfort. We do not recommend this treatment as an entry-level medical cosmetic treatment, as the treatment is very intense and also causes a high downtime. Usually, the pain is well tolerated and is additionally alleviated with a painkilling cream and cooling.
The recovery period can last from 5 to 14 days, depending on the type and extent of treatment.
